Video Interview Featuring Blackjack Booty – Play Like a Pro
Hello, I’m Mike Shackleford, famously known as 'The Wizard of Odds' , and I'm here at the innovative Table Game Conference of 2017. Paris Casino in Las Vegas .
Joining me is Nicholas Pelczar, the creator of the game Blackjack's Booty . Nicholas, could you elaborate on this game?
[00:00:26] Nicholas Pelczar: Absolutely! This game is designed with simplicity in mind, blackjack game yet it introduces an exciting twist where players can bet against each other as well.
It's a variant that's more thrilling compared to other blackjack side bets I've encountered. One player can potentially win every hand through the side bet even if they're losing to their opponents, not the dealer .

This gives players an edge, as they don't actually lose to the house, which is a major draw for this game.
I believe this side bet offers better odds than many others. blackjack side bets We have the potential to win up to $25. In this game, for a $10 or $5 bet, you could win $25 from it.
Well…
...which translates to $23 after the rake applies against the players, while the basic bet against the dealer is just $10.
[00:01:29] Michael: The idea seems quite straightforward. Every player places a side bet of the same amount, which gets pooled together to create the booty.
At the end of the round, the player with the most favorable blackjack hand takes the win.
[00:01:44] Nicholas: Exactly. The booty represents a progressive jackpot.
[00:01:50] Michael: After the house.
[00:01:50] Nicholas: It settles the pot while deducting a rake.
For example, if we have a pot of $20 and a player triumphed:
The house would take out $5, dividing the pot with $2 and placing back $3 in the pool; meanwhile, $1 is retained by the house to support the game.
Additionally, $1 goes into a progressive pot, known as the booty . The booty can be won if either two players or a player and the dealer achieve suited blackjacks, which inspired the game's name Black Jack's Booty.
A portion of the pot, specifically 25%, can also be won if either a player or the dealer gets non-suited blackjacks, such as spades and clubs.
[00:02:40] Michael: So if I’m understanding correctly, most of the time, the pot is awarded to the player with the best blackjack hand.
However, in specific scenarios like when there are suited blackjacks, there is a progressive jackpot. I presume you take a rake from the pot that contributes to the progressive jackpot as well as some for the house?
[00:02:59] Nicholas: Correct, $1 goes to the house and another $1 is allocated for the progressive pot.
[00:03:05] Michael: There seems to be an advantage for players who act last in the game.

What determines the order of play, who goes first, or who acts last?
[00:03:14] Nicholas: I did contemplate that. There was a proposal to use a button similar to poker. However, I didn't think that would provide any significant advantage.
Through trial dealing of it…
...I didn't recognize any dealer or player advantage concerning early or late play. Thus, I left it unchanged for that reason.
[00:03:42] Michael: As someone who's participated in plenty of tournaments, I've noticed there are times when being the last to act influences your strategy, as you know what you need to win that pot.
This could affect strategies in critical situations.
[00:03:58] Nicholas: That’s a subtlety of the game that…
Since this is the debut of this game, there might be modifications regarding some details to make it align better with experienced players who might contemplate that.
[00:04:17] Michael: My unsolicited advice would be to rotate this responsibility among players at the table, or after everyone has placed their bets, to randomly select who has the first action.
[00:04:26] Nicholas: That's a valid point, and I will definitely take it into account. It's something any casino considering this game could adjust.
For now, my focus is on promoting the concept of this game.
[00:04:43] Michael: What occurs in case of a tie or if all players bust?
[00:04:49] Nicholas: If everyone busts, the side bet remains unchanged, and players can choose to opt out or remain in for the next round.
I tie would create a second pot, unless:
If a player wishes to split the pot, they can do so with the one next to them, and those players will then play the next hand using the two player positions that pushed in the first pot.
They would play against others in a new hand while also keeping the tied pot in mind.
[00:05:28] Michael: Can I play a couple of hands?
[00:05:31] Nicholas: Sure.
[00:05:31] Michael: Thanks.
[00:05:33] Nicholas: Can I invite my dealer to join us for a moment…?
[00:05:35] Michael: Absolutely; since this is a competitive game, let's bring in some more players and have some fun here.
[00:05:43] Nicholas: In this game, players play their hand of blackjack, competing against others alongside the dealer. Katherine is our dealer for this round. Each player receives two cards, and the side bet is won once all players have concluded their blackjack hands. The outcome isn't just determined by the initial cards. We have one player at 20, another at 19, one hits a 9, and another stands at 17 while Katherine busts at 24. I’ll aim to beat the dealer here.

Let\"s get started
[00:06:24] Michael: Typically, your best strategy might suggest standing, but since I want to claim that pot, I'm choosing to disregard basic strategy. Now, it's a more challenging decision I'm facing.
[00:06:39] Nicholas: He’s standing firm. We have a bust here, bringing number five’s side bet into the pot. Katherine pulls a 13, leading to another bust. She pays out based on the standard blackjack rules.
Thus, player one wins with a 20. The winnings are added to the pot. The dealer takes a $5 chip, and $1 is set as a rake for the house, with another $1 directed toward the progressive pot, the Black Jack's Booty. The 23 goes to player one.
That\"s a flat bet
Players have the option of either splitting the pot or establishing a second pot, which the dealer marks with a chip to keep track of who receives that pot.
Now in the event of a tie:
Now, if the dealer achieves a blackjack…
...and no other players have blackjacks, all bets remain, even if a player has a total of 21 or 17, because players aren't permitted to take an additional card.
The side bet continues to stand without a payout.
In such a case where the dealer gets a blackjack, they would claim the losing bets, while the side bet stays intact.
[00:08:41] Nicholas: I apologize, I missed that player. The player had a blackjack, meaning they nullify their bet with the dealer, thereby claiming the pot and the rake, as well as the progressive winnings. The progressive pot is rewarded whenever a player or two players or a player with the dealer achieves suited blackjacks, such as spades or clubs, with their initial hands.
[00:08:40] Katherine: He wins.
This wins 100% of the progressive pot. A 25% portion of the progressive winnings goes to scenarios where the dealer or two players get non-suited twin blackjacks.
[00:09:36] Nicholas: If additional ties occur, like with two players, it can lead to a third pot automatically created during tie situations.
[00:09:33] Michael: Great, anything else?
That covers it. Essentially, you are competing against your fellow players. I believe this is a thrilling side bet compared to many others I've seen. It's more engaging as players get an opportunity to win every hand. Thank you.
That\"s one nuance of the game
[00:10:15] Michael: All right, everyone, that was Black Jack's Booty. I appreciate you explaining the game, Nicholas.
[00:10:12] Michael: Thanks, Nicholas.
[00:10:13] Nicholas: Thank you, Michael.
[00:10:19] Nicholas: You're welcome. Thank you, Michael.
[00:10:20] Michael: Thank you all for joining us. Goodbye!
