San Diego Padres’ Key Trio Missing from Action Due to COVID-19 Safety Measures
Introduction
On May 11, 2021, the San Diego Padres made the difficult decision to put their talented young shortstop, Fernando Tatis Jr. , on the injured list after he tested positive for COVID-19. Following his removal from team activities, the organization had to also bench their all-star outfielder, Wil Myers, who was quarantined during their Tuesday night game against the Colorado Rockies due to his own positive test result.
On that same night, the San Diego Padres managed to achieve victory over the Colorado Rockies, concluding the game with an impressive score of 8-1. Yet, the team faced additional challenges, as they also had to set aside their all-star and former World Series champion first baseman, Eric Hosmer , along with versatile players Jurickson Profar and Jorge Mateo. All three were implicated in the MLB's COVID-19 contact tracing efforts.
With their talented trio of Hosmer, Tatis Jr., and Myers, as well as Profar and Mateo, out of action, the San Diego Padres found themselves in a tight spot, particularly because they were slated to compete in a double-header against the Colorado Rockies the following day, May 12, 2021. Such a situation is far from favorable for any MLB team; however, these difficulties are a reflection of the ongoing battle against the COVID-19 pandemic that the United States and the rest of the globe are currently facing. San Diego Padres Statement from Padres’ Manager Jayce Tingler
"It’s certainly not an optimal situation, but I have to commend our players for their efforts tonight. We dealt with quite a bit of chaos. With our bench being so limited, everyone rose to the occasion and contributed. (Tatis Jr.) did nothing wrong. He’s very upset because he wants to be here with his teammates, wants to play, and wants to contribute. We're just a few players short of being at full strength. Will we manage to get back to that? It’s uncertain. However, I remain hopeful. The protocols are designed to provide a competitive edge when we reach that 85% threshold. Our players are knowledgeable, and we continuously educate them about this situation. It is a setback, but we still have the roster to move forward,” asserted Padres' manager Jayce Tingler.
