John Calipari has committed to coaching the Kentucky Wildcats until his retirement.

Introduction

The University of Kentucky and John Calipari have reached an agreement that extends his coaching contract, ensuring he remains the head coach until he steps down. After his retirement, he will continue working for the university in a role as an ambassador.

UCLA is desperate..

...as the search for a prominent new head coach began following the dismissal of Steve Alford in December 2018. Recently, UCLA made an attempt to lure John Calipari away from Kentucky with an enticing offer of $48 million over six years. However, Calipari declined, reaffirming his intention to stay at Kentucky by stating, “Where else would I want to coach? It has nothing to do with the other stuff...people call every year. They presented it to me, and I appreciate it.”

Calipari’s Previous Agreement

Prior to this new agreement, John Calipari already held the title of the highest-paid basketball coach in the nation. His previous contract secured him at the University of Kentucky until 2024, with an expected income of $9.2 million this season along with a $2.6 million retention bonus for the subsequent three years.

“This season, Kentucky finished with a commendable record of 30-7, earning a 2-seed in the NCAA tournament and making it to the Elite Eight before suffering a defeat against Auburn with a score of 77-71 on Sunday.

“Calipari has led the Wildcats to four Final Four appearances, specifically in 2011, 2012, 2014, and 2015, clinching the national championship in 2012. The loss against Auburn marked the third consecutive year that the Wildcats have advanced to the second weekend of the NCAA tournament, but”, fallen short of the Final Four . 

“At 60 years old, Calipari has a remarkable record of 305 wins and 71 losses at Kentucky, contributing to an impressive lifetime coaching record of 708 wins and 209 losses. Throughout his 27-year coaching career, he has qualified for the NCAA tournament 20 times, achieving four official Final Four appearances and one national title.

“Calipari has twice reached the Final Four, only to see those victories later vacated by the NCAA. The 2007-08 Memphis team, which fell to Kansas in the championship game, had all its 38 wins nullified due to an issue with star player Derrick Rose's SAT scores. Additionally, Calipari's UMass team had their 1996 Final Four appearance revoked after it was discovered that star player Marcus Camby had received money from two different sports agents.”
