Burning Man 2022 (Part 1 – Mutant Vehicles)

I've just come back from yet another unforgettable experience at Burning Man. I'm still processing everything I witnessed. In an upcoming newsletter, I might share more in-depth insights about my time there. For now, let me give you a quick overview: it was an incredibly challenging week. The temperatures were sweltering, setting records in northern California and Nevada. We faced a continuous three days of white-out conditions in the afternoons. Unlike many participants, I wasn’t equipped with an air-conditioned RV; instead, I camped out in a small tent. Nevertheless, when the weather cooperated, I had a fantastic time.

In this newsletter, I'm excited to showcase a few photos of what are known as \"Mutant Vehicles\" or Art Cars. These creations range from small golf carts adorned with decorations to massive structures that are comparable in size to a double-decker red bus found in London. What I’m sharing is merely a selection from a much larger variety. Reports suggested that in 2022, there were between 600 and 800 of these unique creations.

In previous years, one of the most remarkable sights on the Playa was an actual 747 aircraft. I wrote a piece about it back in 2018, but unfortunately, it was absent this year. I'm curious if the art car depicted earlier is a tribute to that plane or simply another aircraft design. video Speaking of aircraft, I'm uncertain whether this particular vehicle is meant to resemble the Concorde.

While these art cars are technically supposed to offer free rides, I’ve noticed that many, particularly the larger ones with significant budgets, are often linked to affluent camps, providing rides exclusively for their members. Conversely, the smaller vehicles are generally more welcoming. They tend to allow passengers to hop on while parked but will usher you off when they’re about to leave, prioritizing friends of the driver. However, I have been fortunate to ride on some smaller vehicles with incredibly friendly drivers who embody the values of radical inclusion, collaborative effort, and gifting. I wish I could have shared photos of these vehicles, but my rides occurred at night, making it impossible to capture good images.
