Winners of the 2018 Cutting Edge Awards for Best New Table Games as of 11/8/2018
I regret the delay in providing this newsletter, but my last couple of days were dedicated to the 2018 Cutting Edge table game exhibition. For those unfamiliar, this event primarily serves as a trade fair for professionals in the table game sector, while also highlighting innovative table games, particularly those from independent creators. I found a connection with nearly all the presenters present. You can view many of my recordings from past exhibitions on my video page at Wizard of Odds .
In this edition of the newsletter, I'm excited to announce the recipients of the best new table games accolade, selected by the table game executives who were present at the event.
Bronze: Multiplier Blackjack
This game introduces a side bet in blackjack that hinges on the player’s hand and the dealer’s outcome. To secure a win, the player must succeed with their blackjack bet by taking advantage of the dealer's bust. If the player busts before the dealer, the side wager is lost. The outcome hinges on which card led to the dealer’s bust.
Silver: Ricochet Poker
This game reminds me of a poker-style game I enjoyed in my teens called 'no peekie.' In this game, each participant contributes an equal share to the pot initially. Following that, each player is dealt two face-up cards. The player with the weakest hand is required to either contribute more to the pot to improve their chances or fold. Based on memories from four decades ago (though it feels like just yesterday) and the casual play at the show, this creates quite sizable pots and a delightful social atmosphere. Unlike many other competitive games I’ve observed, in this one, the dealer participates as well.
Gold: Poker Burnout
Currently, this game can be found at the Saratoga venue in Blackhawk, Colorado. You can find a thorough analysis of it at Wizard of Odds already . In essence, the goal is to form the most favorable poker hand possible. Players have the flexibility to select their best two cards out of three and enjoy two chances to increase their bets.
I want to extend my congratulations to the winners and hope they achieve their aspirations of having their table games recognized like Derek Webb’s (creator of Three Card Poker). They are all genuinely wonderful individuals.
