International Car Forest of the Last Church – Update 5/23/2019
This edition of our newsletter focuses on a lesser-known treasure located near Las Vegas. Situated a scenic 184-mile drive north on US95 from Las Vegas' bustling downtown is the historical ghost town of Goldfield, Nevada. Once a busy mining hub with a vibrant community, it now stands mainly deserted, save for a handful of shops that offer antiques and interesting rocks. However, what makes this place a must-visit is the International Car Forest , also referred to as the International Car Forest of the Last Church .
Here, you can expect to encounter around 50 derelict buses and vehicles, many of which are partially embedded in the earth similar to the famous Cadillac Ranch in Texas, but they are spread out over a wide area. You'll find them adorned with various artistic spray-painted designs, some of which are quite impressive. I'll let the photos from my visit illustrate this unique sight.
Throughout my journeys between Las Vegas and Reno, I've passed through Goldfield numerous times without ever being aware of the Car Forest . After learning of its existence, I found myself unable to stop due to the haste of my travel companions who were eager to keep moving. The forest is located slightly outside the town along dirt paths, but it's visible from US95 on your right as you enter Goldfield, just before you reach the turning point. When you see the 'Welcome to Goldfield' sign while heading north, just turn your gaze to the right. From there, you'll need to navigate some dirt roads, which most vehicles can manage without issue.
There isn’t much happening along the route between Las Vegas and Reno. If you're obliged to make this journey, I strongly suggest you check out the Car Forest . Additionally, consider visiting the Clown Motel . Both attractions offer a glimpse into the quirky and unusual side of rural Nevada that many tourists overlook.
