Zion Subway Part II

You may recall my May 26, 2022 newsletter My experience with the Zion Subway was remarkable, and I was thrilled to take the opportunity for another adventure. Earlier in June, our group of nine embarked on the standard route on June 10, 2023, revisiting the Subway.

Initially, you'll need to obtain permits to access the Subway. Upon returning to our vehicle, we noticed rangers inspecting permits, and we saw another group being fined for not having them. As I previously mentioned in a newsletter, permits for popular hikes in Zion can be requested as early as six months in advance. Given the popularity of hikes like the Subway, camping in the Narrows, and Angel’s Landing, it's advisable to apply for permits exactly six months ahead. It's unfortunate that securing these permits involves navigating through bureaucratic procedures well in advance to enjoy many sought-after hikes in the southwest, but the downside of overcrowding would be far less appealing.

We all stayed at the Zion Wildflower the night before, where I’m friendly The manager generously offered us a discount, and I want to commend their hospitality. While it may appear to be a glamping site, the accommodations are truly modern and cozy. The pool is fantastic and there are numerous lawn games available. It’s situated several miles west of Springdale.

Rappelling into the Subway can be done in three different ways, each requiring a car shuttle. The hike begins with a pleasant downhill trek through a relatively untouched part of Zion. The trail can be tricky to navigate, so it's essential to have someone in your group who knows the way. After a few hours, you'll find yourself descending into a location that resembles 'the Wave' in Arizona. canyon. Then the excitement begins.

At this point, there are several spots where ropes become necessary. While there are no major rappels, there are many shorter ones.

Many of the rappels are short enough that they can be downclimbed, but the last one essentially mandates a rappel, unless there’s an alternative method I’m unaware of. I believe this area closely resembles a smaller version of the primary Subway tunnel.

The final rappel brings you into the primary Subway section, which also has a hiking trail from below. This area, resembling a subway tunnel, is renowned and ranks among the most picturesque hikes I've experienced.

Words fail to adequately capture its beauty, so I’ll share some photographs. The subway tunnel area is not very extensive, but it's the only part that necessitates rappelling.
