Common Questions about Traveling to Las Vegas

In this week's newsletter, I will address some of the most common inquiries I receive regarding trips to Las Vegas .

Q: Are there changes in the rules for table games?

A: The main variation in the rules pertains to player limits (for instance, a maximum of three players per blackjack table) and players do not handle the cards, except during live poker games. Blackjack is always dealt face up. In games like Ultimate Texas Hold 'Em, you’re allowed to see the hole cards of the other player, but this information may not significantly assist you.

Q: Have the limits on table games increased or decreased?

A: They appear to be quite similar to what they were before the global pandemic hit.

Q: Are the slots and video poker machines looser or tighter?

A: It’s hard to assess the slots precisely, but the video poker tables feel about the same as before. Contrary to what many believe, casinos do not constantly adjust the looseness or tightness of their slots. They typically establish guidelines on their payout rates and maintain that strategy consistently.

Q: Is smoking still allowed?

A: Sadly, yes. While not directly related to your question, it's worth noting that smoking causes 480,000 (1) deaths in the U.S. each year, including 41,000 (1) from secondhand smoke. For context, there have been 120,000 (2) deaths attributed to Coronavirus in the U.S. as of June 17, 2020.

Q: What are the resorts in Las Vegas doing to entice visitors back?

A: Hotel room rates appear to be slightly lower than normal. I will provide some examples of the prices below. Many, if not all, establishments have eliminated parking fees. However, I was hoping to see some special deals, but unfortunately, I’ve encountered none.

Here are examples of hotel stays from Friday, June 19, to Sunday, June 21. The prices include taxes and resort fees. Speaking of those resort fees, it seems that Travelocity has started indicating them in the total displayed on the initial search page. Finally!!! This change is long overdue and beneficial for customers.

Venetian $604

Cosmopolitan $590

Wynn $561

Caesars Palace $404

South Point $288

Treasure Island $240

Luxor $204

Q: Are face masks required?

A: No.

Q: How many people wear them?

A: The majority of staff members are wearing masks, but only around 20% of guests do. I’ve observed that older guests tend to wear them more frequently. Therefore, if health safety is a priority for you, I recommend staying at establishments that cater to the older population, which are generally found in residential neighborhoods.

Q: Are the chips cleaned and how?

A: Having played for just about two hours since reopening, I haven’t noticed anyone sanitizing chips on the tables. It’s unclear how they manage hygiene away from the tables. My recommendation is to always wash your hands thoroughly right after playing any games, including slots.

Q: What are my chances of contracting or dying from Coronavirus if I visit?

A: This varies greatly based on numerous factors like your age, health status, the exact timing of your visit, your accommodation choice, how much time you spend in crowded areas, and your hand-washing habits.

The best I can provide is a rough estimate. Let’s work with some data concerning the entirety of the United States.

New cases per day: 79,558

Deaths per day: 739

Population: 331,002,651

Ratio population to infections per day: 4161

Ratio population to deaths per day: 447,906

The next figure will be somewhat arbitrary. Let's assume your risk level increases by 10 times compared to the national average. Most people may find this number too high or low, so feel free to adjust it as you see fit. That said, let’s say you plan to stay for three days, which suggests your odds of contracting the virus during your visit are about 1 in 140, and your chances of dying from it are around 1 in 15,000.

As actuaries often say, a micromort is a one in a million chance of death. Thus, a trip to Las Vegas lasting three days would equate to approximately 67 micromorts.

If you're contemplating a trip to Las Vegas, I hope this information proves useful. We value your patronage, but please prioritize your safety and hygiene while you enjoy your time here.
