Gunlock Falls

For this week’s newsletter, I highly recommend taking a trip to Gunlock State Park. Tucked away in the southwestern part of Utah, it's conveniently located close to Saint George and only a couple of hours from Las Vegas. The park boasts a lovely reservoir along with a series of picturesque waterfalls and natural pools that form below them. Provided the water levels are good, it’s an ideal location to relax and enjoy the refreshing waters, especially during the warmer months of spring and summer. Pictures can often convey the experience better than words, so I’ve included some from my visit on June 9.

Waterfall
Here you can see one of the several waterfalls. I dare you to try and swim behind the falls, which is quite a challenge due to the strong current.
Top of the falls
This area is situated right at the top of the falls. Be prepared to leap over the water if you need to navigate around.
Cloud magic trick
My levitating cloud magic trick.
Cliff jumping
Another swimming pool offers exciting cliff diving opportunities.
Higher jump
A more daring dive into the same pool shown previously. Although the water felt a bit cool, it was quite pleasant on a hot June day.
Paddleboards
Here lies the reservoir upstream from the waterfalls. I spotted signs indicating they rent out kayaks and paddleboards, but I brought along my inflatable one.
Duck poop island
I like to refer to this as duck poop island. Admittedly, my tan looks quite uneven, and I lack upper body strength. I apologize if this sight offends your eyes! I really should have worn my shirt for this shot.

To conclude, the parking fee is $10 per car, which seems to operate on an honor system. Along the brief trail leading to the waterfalls, I observed a table where two rangers were collecting fees and stamping visitors' hands. There were also signs featuring a QR code for payment as well.

It's important to note that there are no food options available on-site, and I didn’t see any purified water sources, so make sure to bring all necessary supplies. If you happen to pass through Saint George afterward, I would also recommend visiting. Viva Chicken

Utah State Parks This website suggests that the waterfalls may not always have water flowing, and they occasionally close them off if there is excessive debris at the top. Sometimes small branches and logs may wash down. It’s wise to check this website before planning your trip.
