One notable advantage when playing slot machines revolves around what I term 'must-hit-by progressives.' These are unique jackpots that can activate independently from the results displayed on the game reels and must reach a predetermined amount. To my knowledge, this is the case for nearly all progressives, with the exception of games produced by AGS. There has been longstanding speculation in the advantage play community that AGS machines generally do not trigger until around 90% of the distance from the seed value to the must-hit-by point.

Recently, I acquired some evidence supporting this theory. I received a par sheet detailing the contribution rates to both the jackpot meter and the seed value. While it does not disclose the exact mechanics of how the jackpots are activated, I performed some calculations to derive the average jackpots for the River Dragons version where the significant jackpot begins at $4,000 and must hit at $5,000. Here are my findings:

As a very basic guideline for now, I would recommend not participating unless the larger jackpot has reached at least $4,914, or the smaller jackpot is no less than $487.
