Without Wheels Video Poker

Introduction

Without Wheels operates like traditional video poker, with one exception: the A-2-3-4-5 combination (known as a 'wheel') does not qualify as a straight. This game is available at online casinos using Soft Magic Dice software, but it may not appear under the name 'Without Wheels.' Instead, you might find it listed as follows: Jacks or Better According to the online guidelines, these variations seem to follow standard Jacks or Better video poker rules. The specific rule about aces not being treated as low isn't explicitly mentioned or ruled out in the guidelines. I designated this game 'Without Wheels' to highlight that the A-2-3-4-5 straight is referred to as 'the wheel' in poker terminology.

  • Jacks or Better
  • Moonlight Poker
  • Science of Cards
  • Royal Poker
  • Genie of the Lamp

As stated earlier, the gameplay is identical to standard video poker, with the only exception being that the A-2-3-4-5 straight does not exist. This means aces are always high. Below is a screenshot showing an instance of that straight, which did not yield any payout.

Rules

To further illustrate this unusual rule, I’ll share an excerpt from an email sent to a frustrated player who complained about not receiving a payout for the straight depicted in the screenshot above. It seems there was some confusion on Laura's part regarding the difference between a straight and a flush.

"Thank you for choosing our casino for your gaming experience.

In response to your inquiry, I regret to inform you that our guidelines specify that aces are not valid as substitutes in a flush. We empathize with your disappointment and shall consider revising our rules in the future.

The table below displays the likelihood and return contributions for all possible outcomes in Without Wheels, referencing a 9-6 payout structure. The lower right corner indicates a return of 99.25%.

Have a great day!

With kind regards,

Laura.

Analysis

The return percentage for traditional 9-6 Jacks or Better video poker is 0.995439. Consequently, the omission of the 'wheel' results in a 0.30% reduction in return.

It seems logical to me that I wouldn’t hold three cards that make a low straight flush, preferring to keep only the ace when there's no superior hand to play.

Strategy

Effective from early July 2015, Mission2Game casino now recognizes and pays out for the wheel straight.
