Super Hot Roll

Introduction

On May 3, 2021, I discovered the Super Hot Roll game at Red Rock Casino in Las Vegas. This game introduces an exciting twist, Hot Roll where multipliers impact not only the current game but also the subsequent one.

Rules

  1. Super Hot Roll is an optional enhancement available for 3-, 5-, and 10-play video poker formats.
  2. When players wager between one and five coins per round, the game functions similarly to standard multi-play video poker without the added feature.
  3. When a player opts to bet ten coins per hand, the special feature becomes active. Wins are computed based on a five-coin wager for every hand, while the additional five coins are simply a cost for utilizing this feature.
  4. Once the feature is activated, players may receive a multiplier at random.
  5. The value of this multiplier is determined by rolling two dice.
  6. Typically, the multiplier applies only to one hand after the draw. However, there are instances where it may also be awarded on the deal, affecting all hands, though I cannot specify how frequently this occurs.
  7. Post-draw, wins are assessed, incorporating any multipliers from that round. Any multipliers earned will carry over and apply to the same hands in the following round.
  8. If a player receives a multiplier for a hand that already had one from the previous round, they retain the initial multiplier for that hand, and the new multiplier applies solely to the next round.

If my description of the gameplay was not clear, I recommend checking the help screens available in the game. You can click any image for a larger view.

Assumed Rules

In Hot Roll Poker The odds of activating the feature are 1 in 6, resulting in an average multiplier, including 1x, calculated as (5/6)*(1/6)*7 = 12/6 = 2. I suspect that Hot Roll Poker operates under similar expectations, yielding an average multiplier of 2.0.

In 3-play, the rules indicate the chance of obtaining at least one multiplier is 1 in 4.99. For this probability and an average multiplier of 2.0, the odds of receiving a multiplier on the initial deal are calculated at 2.48%. If that does not occur, the probability for a multiplier on the draw becomes 6.39%.

In 5-play, the guidelines stipulate that the likelihood of achieving at least one multiplier stands at 1 in 3.77. To meet this probability with an average multiplier of 2.0, I've calculated that the odds for a multiplier during the deal are 3.65%. If that does not happen, the draw probability is reduced to 5.25%.

In 10-play, the requirements specify the odds of receiving at least one multiplier are 1 in 2.78. To achieve this probability with an average multiplier of 2.0, the odds for the multiplier during the deal stands at 5.09%, while the draw probability becomes 3.82% if that does not transpire.

Example

super hot roll example 1

In the image above, I activated the feature by betting ten coins per round. I was dealt a pair of aces initially, which I decided to keep.

super hot roll example 2

My pair of aces transformed into two pairs for the top hand, while below, I unexpectedly landed an 11x multiplier. The base game played was 6-5 Bonus Poker, rewarding 1 for 1 for jacks or better and 2 for 1 on two pairs. Betting 5 coins per turn led to a total \"win\" calculation of 5×(2 + 1 + 1×11) = 70 credits.

super hot roll example 3

The 11x multiplier from the lower hand carried over to the next round. In that round, I received a two pair on the deal, which I chose to hold.

super hot roll example 4

Unfortunately, none of my hands improved after the draw, resulting in no extra multipliers. However, I still retained the 11x multiplier from the previous round's lower hand. Thus, my total \"win\" for this hand amounted to 5×(2 + 2 + 11×2) = 130 credits.

Analysis

I believe activating the feature significantly reduces the house edge, potentially by half, similar to conventional Hot Roll Poker. The following list represents various common games and their associated pay tables, both with and without the feature. Keep in mind that this is a hypothetical sample based on typical video poker offerings.

Vulturing

If the previous player left sufficient multipliers in play, the next bet can provide a favorable advantage. You may wonder what 'sufficient' means. Begin by calculating the total multipliers left by the preceding player, counting no multiplier as an equivalent of 1x. After performing a considerable amount of mathematical analysis and simulations, I have compiled recommendations for how many multipliers you should seek based on the number of plays.

  • 3-play: 6x or more
  • 5-play: 9x or more
  • 10-play: 16x or more
