Red and White
Introduction
The game known as Red and White originated as a street activity in the Philippines, and it can now be experienced at Resorts World in Manila. It’s a straightforward game where three balls are dropped onto a grid composed of red, white, and yellow squares. Players can place various bets based on the potential colors where the balls might end up.
Rules
Below are the rules as I understand them. Some might be derived from unofficial sources, so if there are any inaccuracies, please feel free to provide corrections.
- Three balls are dropped onto a grid consisting of 10 by 10 squares. I believe that no more than one ball can occupy the same square simultaneously.
- The 100 squares are colored as follows:
- Red: 49
- White: 49
- Yellow: 2
- The following bets are available:
- If two balls land on red squares, it pays out at odds of 1 to 1, unless the outcome is two reds and one yellow, in which case the bet loses.
- For two balls landing on white squares, it similarly pays 1 to 1 unless the result is two whites and one yellow, which results in a loss.
- Landing three balls in red squares results in payout odds of 7 to 1.
- Should all three balls fall into white squares, it also pays 7 to 1.
- If at least one ball lands on a yellow square, the payout is 15 to 1.
- Landing two balls in yellow squares results in a hefty payout of 250 to 1.
Analysis
The table below illustrates the number of successful combinations (out of 161,700 total possibilities), the likelihood of winning, and the expected payout for each betting option.
Red and White
Bet | Pays | Combinations | Probability | Return |
---|---|---|---|---|
Two red | 1 | 76,048 | 0.470303 | -0.059394 |
Two white | 1 | 76,048 | 0.470303 | -0.059394 |
Three red | 7 | 18,424 | 0.113939 | -0.088485 |
Three white | 7 | 18,424 | 0.113939 | -0.088485 |
One yellow | 15 | 9,604 | 0.059394 | -0.049697 |
Two yellow | 250 | 98 | 0.000606 | -0.847879 |
As illustrated, there is a considerable variance in the house edge for this game, ranging from a low 4.97% for betting on one yellow to a high of 84.79% for betting on two yellows. Based on my 20 years of casino game analysis, I must say the bet on two yellows ranks among the most unfavorable options I have encountered.
