High Low

Introduction

High Low is a game that can be found at many online casinos, though it may go by various names. For instance, BetSoft refers to it as Draw Hi-Lo . In contrast, iSoftBet identifies it differently. The naming seems inconsistent as it's also called High Low, Casino High Low, and Las Vegas High Low. Given that 'casino' is too vague and I've yet to encounter this game in Las Vegas, I prefer to simply call it 'High Low.'

Regardless of its name, the game is quite straightforward, requiring players to wager whether the upcoming card will be higher or lower than the one currently displayed. The odds correlate closely with the likelihood of winning.

Rules

  1. I'm unsure how many decks are in play, but mathematically, it doesn't significantly influence the outcomes if ties are disregarded.
  2. Card rankings follow the same rules as poker, with the exception that aces are always considered low.
  3. Players receive a card drawn at random. If it's between a 2 and a queen, they can choose to wager on whether the next card will be higher or lower.
  4. When a player guesses correctly, they are paid based on the pay table listed below. In cases of a tie, the wager is returned (contrary to what the table suggests). If the guess is wrong, the player loses their bet.
  5. Except for the initial choice, players can leave the game at any moment and take home their winnings accumulated up to that point.

Below is the pay table. All payouts are indicated on a 'for one' basis.

High Low Pay Table

Card Low Pays High Pays
2 10.7 1.1
3 5.3 1.1
4 3.5 1.1
5 2.6 1.3
6 2.1 1.5
7 1.87 1.87
8 1.5 2.1
9 1.3 2.6
10 1.1 3.5
J 1.1 5.3
Q 1.1 10.7

Strategy

Here’s the best strategy for playing High Low for those who don’t count cards:

  • 2, 3, 10: High
  • 4, J, Q: Low
  • 5 - 9: House edge same either way

Analysis

The table below indicates the house edge for both the high and low bets across all ranks for players who are not counting cards.

Higher Analysis

Card House
Edge
Low
House
Edge
High
2 10.20% -0.78%
3 10.98% 7.84%
4 11.76% 16.47%
5 12.55% 12.55%
6 11.76% 11.76%
7 6.12% 6.12%
8 11.76% 11.76%
9 12.55% 12.55%
10 16.47% 11.76%
J 7.84% 10.98%
Q -0.78% 10.20%

You read that correctly! The house edge is negative for cards above a 2 and below a queen, providing the player with a 0.78% edge. However, the player must still play the initial card, regardless of its value.

Strategy

If you must place a bet, I recommend following the outlined strategy for the first card. Proceed if the next card is a 2 or queen; otherwise, take your winnings and start anew.
