Easy Over Under

Introduction

The game Easy Over Under was introduced at the Red Wind Casino located in Olympia, WA on May 2, 2011. It is a straightforward dice game that involves rolling two dice along with drawing one playing card. Players can place four different types of bets based on how the dice results compare to the card drawn.

Rules

Gameplay commences as players place wagers on over, under, and/or 'Bet the Spread'. Following this, two dice are rolled and their numbers are displayed. If the total is not seven, players have the option to place an additional bet known as the 'Short Side'. After this, one card is dealt to each participant, and the values of the cards are determined as follows:

  • Ace = 1 point
  • 2 to 10 = Pip value
  • Jack = 11 points
  • Queen = 12 points
  • King = 13 points

It’s important to remember that both the expected value of the dice roll and the value of the card is generally set at seven. Here are the precise regulations governing each type of bet.

Over

The Over wager is successful if the value of the drawn card exceeds the total rolled on the dice. In cases where the values are equal, the player only loses half their stake. However, if the tie occurs due to rolling doubles, no one loses – it’s a push. Winning bets return the original wager.

Under

This bet functions similarly to the Over, yet here the player claims victory if the card’s value is less than that of the dice roll.

Bet the Spread

The Bet the Spread stake is rewarded based on the difference in points between the sum of the dice and the value of the card dealt. Below is the payout table:

  • 11 = 30 to 1
  • 10 = 10 to 1
  • 9 = 5 to 1
  • 8 = 3 to 1
  • 7 = 2 to 1
  • 6 = 1 to 1
  • 5 or less = Loss

Short Side

The Short Side represents the singular bet that can be placed after the two dice have been rolled. If the rolled total is below seven, this bet wins if the card value is less than that of the dice outcome. Conversely, if the total exceeds seven, it pays out if the card exceeds the rolled figure. The greater the disparity from seven in the dice total, the higher the payout for the Short Side if it wins.

If the card value matches the dice roll, the player incurs a loss of half their wager, unless the roll features doubles, in which case it results in a push. This rule aligns with the principles of both the Over and Under wagers. The rationale behind this partial loss on ties is to provide the casino a slight advantage, ensuring the odds aren't perfectly level.

  • 2 or 12 = 11 to 1
  • 3 or 11 = 5 to 1
  • 4 or 10 = 3 to 1
  • 5 or 9 = 2 to 1
  • 6 or 8 = 7 to 5
  • 7 = Short Side not available.

The Short Side wager is restricted to the same amount as the player's original Over or Under wager.

Strategy

To reduce the cumulative house edge, it's advisable to place the Over or Under bet first. Subsequently, leverage the Short Side only when doubles occur, and only up to the full amount of the initial wager. This strategy would lead to an average bet of approximately 1.166667 units with an anticipated loss of about 0.032051 units per session. The 'Element of Risk,' computed as the ratio of average loss to average bet under this approach, is 0.032051/1.16667 = 2.75%. The house edge associated with the Bet the Spread wager is slightly higher at 2.99%.
