Dragon Phoenix

Introduction

The game Dragon Phoenix closely resembles the version played in Australia Two Up This straightforward game involves two coins. Instead of the traditional Heads and Tails, players use a Dragon and a Phoenix. This game was first observed at the Venetian in Macau back in September 2011.

Rules

Participants take turns tossing two coins simultaneously. One coin is placed with the Dragon side up and the other with the Phoenix side facing up before they are flipped. I’ve yet to experience the game myself, which makes it a bit challenging to picture. Here are the various betting options available.

Dragon

A bet on the Dragon will be successful if two Dragon coins appear before two Phoenix coins. However, if a Dragon and a Phoenix appear, referred to as 'odds', five times in succession results in all bets being lost. The table below illustrates the potential results, with the bottom right corner indicating a house edge of 3.125%.

Dragon Bet

Event Pays Combinations Probability Return
Win 31 0.484375 1 0.484375
Loss 33 0.515625 -1 -0.515625
Total 64 1   -0.03125

Phoenix

This is the inverse of the Dragon bet. The player must achieve two Phoenixes before getting two Dragons or five odds.

Spinner's Bet - Dragon

The Spinner's Bet on Dragon functions like a three-step parlay bet on the Dragon. Essentially, the player is wagering that the Dragon will triumph in three consecutive rounds. The payout odds stand at 7.5 to 1, which surpasses the 7 to 1 odds available through regular parlaying of winnings. The table ahead displays the various possible outcomes, and the lower right corner indicates a house edge of 3.40%.

Spinner's Bet - Phoenix

This is the counterpart to the Spinner's Bet on Dragon. The Phoenix is required to win three rounds in a row, with a payout of 7.5 to 1 for a successful bet.

Odds

The Odds bet is successful if the coins land showing one Dragon and one Phoenix five times consecutively. The likelihood of achieving one of each on a single flip is 1/2. Thus, the chance of this occurring five times in a row is (1/2)^5, resulting in 1/32. The payout for wins is 25 to 1, and the table below displays a house edge of 18.75%.
