Ask The Wizard #239

I've heard that the range of video poker options at a casino might reveal how loose their slot machines are. The theory suggests that if a casino offers a wide array of full-play poker games, they are likely to have looser slots as well. Is there any truth to this idea, or is it merely an urban legend?

I believe there's some truth to that theory. During my analysis, I found a significant relationship between the looseness of a casino's video poker and slot machines. Las Vegas slot machine survey If you were managing a casino, what strategies would you implement to boost revenue in a challenging local market? (excluding just handing out free cash)

I'm not particularly experienced in that area, but I adhere to Benny Binion's philosophy: provide players with genuine value and don’t hesitate to accept their bets. This will encourage them to return.

Is there a method to access payout probability schedules for slot machines in Nevada? I reached out to the gaming authority, but they informed me that this information is confidential. I'm intrigued because often, when using a progressive slot machine, the odds must eventually favor the player. On a related note, what are the legal requirements surrounding the disclosure of probability tables? I appreciate your assistance.

Unfortunately, there isn't a way to obtain that information, and I'm not thrilled about it either. Players should be entitled to understand the rules and odds associated with their bets. Others have queried if referencing a specific law could help. I doubt it would be effective. To my knowledge, Holland may be the only place where players have a right to know such details. I’ve heard that in Amsterdam, there are small cards on machines that explain the virtual reel configurations, enabling players to potentially calculate odds using that and the pay table.

I'm curious about the outcome of the Eternity II puzzle challenge. Has it been solved? Are you continuing to work on it? state Freedom of Information Act I appreciate your inquiry. No, I haven't engaged with that puzzle since my last update. According to their website, they’ll have scrutiny dates set for December 31, 2009, and perhaps in 2010 if needed. In my view, it will remain unsolved.

Update: It seems the Eternity II website is no longer operational.

For casual blackjack players who utilize basic strategy and don't count cards, does the house's advantage increase with deeper shoe penetration? I think it does, because the deeper you go, the more the count shifts from zero, which should prompt strategic adjustments. Since non-counters won’t know when or how to adapt, they are likely to make more errors as the count changes. Therefore, wouldn’t it be smarter for a non-counter to play at tables with less penetration? November 17, 2008 Ask the Wizard column In a game without a cut card, the house edge remains consistent for non-counters. High and low card clusters are equally probable throughout the shoe – at the start, in the middle, or at the end. Just because the count is balanced at the top doesn’t guarantee a steady distribution of card values. It seems like you're suggesting that card clusters increase towards the end of the deck. If that were true, reversing the order of dealing would alter the odds, which seems rather absurd.

Imagine a basic strategy player has a hand total of 16 against a dealer's 10 late in the shoe and decides to hit. If the count is high, standing would be the optimal decision, which might look like a mistake to a counter observing. Conversely, if the count is negative, hitting could be more advantageous. Ultimately, the results average out for the basic strategy player.

For a basic strategy player aiming to minimize the house edge, a continuous shuffler is preferable. Additionally, penetration does not influence the house advantage. Also, with shallower penetration, there is often increased time spent shuffling, which results in a lower projected hourly loss.
