Ask The Wizard #152

While watching 'Deal or No Deal', I recognize that the 'offer' presented by the banker is generally the average value of the remaining cases divided by their quantity, with a slight variation due to rounding. Is there any actual strategy to this game, or is accepting 'the deal' simply a reasonable option? Does the player's approach change based on the number of cases they have left to open?

Darren from Elk Grove, CA

As my December 26, 2005 The data in the column indicates that the banker's offer is often significantly lower than the average value of the remaining cases. If this were consistently the case, all strategies would yield identical expected values, leaving players indifferent to any given offer.

I appreciate your website! It's fantastic! According to your Blackjack House Edge Calculator that factors in a six-deck game where the dealer stands on a soft 17, doubles on the first two cards, allows late surrender, and permits resplits up to four hands, the calculated house edge stands at 0.334%. Could you explain why another reliable source reports a slightly lower house edge of 0.325%, which is 0.009% less? QFit I appreciate your kind words. The slight discrepancy may arise from various assumptions made during the calculations. For instance, are cards shuffled after each round, or is a cut card used? Does the player utilize a total-dependent basic strategy or a composition-dependent strategy? Have interactions of rules been considered, or is the calculator merely summing up the individual effects? My calculations are based on random simulations using a total-dependent basic strategy, both of which might slightly disadvantage the player, potentially explaining the higher house edge. Additionally, this incongruence might stem from the random simulation's sample size being too small. Regardless of these factors, I believe the difference is minimal—just one wager for every 11,000 hands played.

A couple of months back, my wife and father-in-law visited Las Vegas, and she was curious about where to find Keno games (not the Keno slot machines). She was informed that most hotels have discontinued Keno. Is this accurate? If it is, do you know the reason behind it, Mr. Wizard?

I respectfully disagree. I can't recall a single major casino on the Strip that lacks a Keno lounge. The only establishments without Keno are typically the smaller local casinos in the outskirts of Las Vegas, as most locals understand that Keno is not a favorable game.

Bill from Malibu

P.S. A reader later clarified that the New York New York casino in Las Vegas has indeed removed its Keno lounge.

What are the guidelines for using old casino chips? For instance, if I possess a 20-year-old chip valued at $100, can I trade it for a new chip? Will they increase the value due to its age? Also, can chips from defunct casinos still be used anywhere? Thank you.

Occasionally, the Las Vegas Review Journal will announce in their classifieds that a particular casino is ceasing to accept a certain chip style, along with a deadline for redeeming them. After this date, the casino isn’t required to honor the chip. Nevertheless, there is a thriving market for casino chips, particularly for expired ones. I don't have extensive knowledge of it, but I do know that there are collector shows in Vegas, and the museum at the Tropicana has a variety of old chips available for purchase.

Hello! I recently discovered your website, and I think it’s an outstanding resource for blackjack enthusiasts. I do have a question, though. Could you clarify how a positive expectation exists when following basic strategy with a total of ten against a dealer showing either a ten or an ace (assuming the dealer does not have blackjack)? Your table indicates a positive expectation for both scenarios, but I’m struggling to grasp how. It seems that both the player and dealer would apply similar tactics, hitting until reaching 17 or exceeding it, thus eliminating the soft 17 for the player, making the positive expectation unclear.

Thanks for your kind feedback. To clarify, let’s use an example with six decks (the dealer’s soft 17 rule doesn’t affect the outcome). My analysis indicates that the expected value of a total of 6+4 against an ace is +0.081336, while against a ten, it’s +0.026796. These positive expected values stem from the assumption that the dealer has already checked for blackjack and confirmed they do not have one. Meanwhile, the player still has the opportunity to draw an ace for a total of 21. Essentially, the player can achieve a 21 with the next card while the dealer cannot, given the rules. If I were to compile a table according to the European no-peek rule, the expected values would actually be negative.

During my latest trip to Vegas, I observed two dealers at separate locations (one at The Orleans and the other at Circus-Circus) encouraging players to double down on a pair of fours against a dealer's six instead of splitting. Since I’m the blackjack enthusiast in my group, my friends consulted me about this advice, and I could only reiterate that splitting is indeed the correct option (assuming doubling after a split is allowed). Is there a way to find the probabilities of each method, or could you provide that information for me? Kind regards. blackjack appendix 9 I’ve mentioned this previously, but although I hold dealers in high esteem, they often dispense misleading information. Splitting a pair of fours against a five or six is a common situation where both players and dealers erroneously advise against it. There's a frequent misconception that you should never split any pairs starting with 'F', referring to fours, fives, and face cards. While it is accurate for fives and face cards, players should actually split fours against a five or six if doubling after a split is permissible. Otherwise, they should hit, except when playing with a single deck where they should double if possible. My analysis indicates the expected values of splitting 4, 4 against a 6 in a six-deck game with the dealer hitting on soft 17.

First off, thank you for providing such an informative website. I have a quick question regarding the fortune bonus bet: While I realize this bet has poor odds (paying out less than 20% of the time), I still enjoy playing it on the off chance that I might hit a significant hand. At the Trump Casino in Gary, Indiana (near Chicago), the fortune bonus bet awards regular bonuses for three of a kind or better, but also includes a 1-to-1 payout for 3-pair. Statistically, how would this alteration affect my chances of winning on the bonus? What frequency can I expect to achieve 3-pair in my hand? Thank you once again.

Werner

You’re welcome! Here are the various combinations for achieving three pairs: blackjack appendix 9 Using a Joker as a singleton: combin(13,3)*combin(4,2)

Stand: -0.114085
Hit: + 0.113365
Double: + 0.092929
Split: +0.207228 (double after split allowed)
Split: + 0.056954 (double after split not allowed)

The overall number of combinations is combin(53,7) = 154,143,080. Hence, the likelihood of forming three pairs is calculated as (2,471,040 + 380,160 + 61,776) / 154,143,080 = 0.0189. Thus, modifying a three-pair hand from a loss to a 1-to-1 push would lower the house edge by 1.89%. Fortune Bonus Pai Gow My boyfriend and I have been together for three years. After starting our relationship on Halloween, he imposed a rule stating that I could have no friends, claiming he was all I needed in the world. This rule has only tightened over time, and now I'm not even allowed to say hello to our roommate, acknowledge his friends at work, or answer his phone calls. Ever since our last anniversary, we’ve just been arguing, and it feels like our relationship is deteriorating. He has mentioned the possibility of inviting other people into the relationship, and his ex-girlfriend has been contacting him 'just to see how he’s doing'—which is quite odd since they hadn’t spoken in years, yet now she calls three times a week and chats for hours. I’m concerned about whether they might be rekindling something or if it’s merely friendship. This situation strikes me as a double standard. Regardless, I sense our relationship is near its end. Should I try to understand what’s happening with him and how to manage it, end things now, or should I wait for him to bring it up?

Greg

What a waste of three years! You should have walked away the moment he established rules concerning your friendships. Cut ties with this insecure individual immediately. My sympathy would ultimately lie with his ex-girlfriend, should they reconcile.

No joker: combin (13,3)*10*combin(4,2)3*4 = 2,471,040
Joker used in a pair of aces: combin(12,2)*10*42*combin(4,2)2= 380,160
Currently, I’m playing your Ties Win Blackjack at Harrods, and I absolutely love it! It's an excellent game. I have a question regarding a promotion that Harrods is running, where if I win five consecutive hands or bets, I'll get back my lowest bet from that sequence. Since I’m flat betting, I’ll effectively recoup one of my bets. Should I have chosen a different game for this promotion? I've noticed that roulette is excluded, but all other games at Harrods are eligible. Thank you!3= 61,776

I appreciate your participation! Indeed, Ties Win Blackjack is a great pick for this promotion. The probability of winning all five bets is 43.314%, a half win is 8.75%, and a loss stands at 47.936%. Therefore, the likelihood of achieving any win is 52.064%. The odds of securing five consecutive wins is 0.52064 to the power of 5, which is approximately 3.825%. By flat betting, this results in an additional 3.825% return for the player. Ordinarily, the house edge is 0.247%, meaning the player's advantage under this promotion would be 3.5785%. However, I couldn't find any mention of this promotion on the casino's website, and considering my usual 2-3 week delay in responding to emails, it’s likely that the offer has already ended.
