Ask The Wizard #134

Last night, someone proposed a side bet to me in a game of Texas Hold ’em. He mentioned that at least one face card, or any three ranks, would show up on the flop and offered evens on the wager. Should I have considered taking that bet?

anonymous

The ways to select 3 cards from a pool of 40 non-face cards can be calculated as (40*39*38)/(1*2*3), resulting in 9880. When selecting 3 cards from a total of 52, the calculation is (52*51*50)/(1*2*3), coming to 22100. This means the chance of not drawing a face card stands at 9880/22100, equating to 44.71%. Consequently, the likelihood of pulling at least one face card is 55.29%. In this wager, the player had a 10.58% edge.

The Borgata casino in Atlantic City implements a unique rule regarding the commission for pai gow poker, which differs from other establishments. They impose commission fees in increments of 50 cents instead of the standard 25 cents. For instance, when I played and won a hand worth $25, my commission was only $1. How significantly does this impact the house edge?

anonymous

From the probabilities noted in my pai gow poker study, we have the following insights.

Player wins both 28.61%
Tie 41.48%
Banker wins both 29.91%

Therefore, you are benefitting from a 4% commission reduction. As a player, your expected value equals .2861*0.96 - .2991, resulting in a -2.44% expectation. For the banker position (when playing one on one), it equates to .2991*0.96 - .2861 = 0.001036. Hence, this 4% commission effectively lessens the house edge by approximately 0.3%.

P.S. In May 2008, a reader pointed out that the Borgata does indeed use quarters in pai gow poker and requires bets to be placed in $5 increments.

What procedure do casinos follow when you cash out your winnings? For example, if you score between $10,000 and $15,000 playing Roulette or Blackjack, are you able to receive that amount via a cashier's check or money order? It's certainly not advisable to travel back to Canada with a large amount of cash!

Typically, most casinos allow you to withdraw your winnings in any form you prefer for larger transactions. However, should you consider converting cash to checks to obscure funds, keep in mind that casinos require a Social Security number and record any transactions that exceed $10,000.

A coworker of mine recently had an experience with an online casino, specifically playing 10-line Jacks or Better Video Poker. He made a deposit and proceeded to play 10 hands. Unfortunately, none of the 10 hands (or the total of 100 lines) yielded a win. Could you please determine the probability of experiencing such a dry spell across 10 hands of 10-line JoB? Moreover, would your calculated probabilities suggest the game might be rigged? Your assistance is greatly appreciated!

This table is grounded on a random simulation. While it is theoretically plausible to not score any wins in 100 plays, there have been 15,820,000 attempts without such an occurrence. Thus, it's unnecessary to mention this scenario. According to the table, the chance of getting a zero in 10 plays sits at 0.025914, or 2.59%. Multiplying this out means the probability of this happening successively ten times is 0.025914.10= 1 in 7,323,073,295,177,980.

I tried the software in question while in practice mode, and my results seemed satisfactory. Particularly, I won something in each of the 10 games played. However, as far as I know, no actual casino utilizes this software. real money players from the U.S What additional house edge is applied in blackjack when players are not permitted to double down or split their hands?

Not allowing splitting or doubling places an additional 1.91% cost on the player.

No splitting costs the player 0.58%.
No doubling costs the player 1.47%.
What is the likelihood of rolling a total of 13 or more with 3, 4, or 5 dice, allowing for the retention of the top three dice from the roll?

I've come across video blackjack in various Las Vegas casinos and am curious whether that game is regulated similarly to video poker. If it is, does employing basic blackjack strategy still provide the player with the highest payback rate? If not, is there a specific strategy to follow for video blackjack?

anonymous

Here are the probabilities:

3 dice: 25.93%
4 dice: 48.77%
5 dice: 66.13%.

Yes. Any video card game operating in Nevada must be conducted from a limited shuffle deck. This means that you should see similar results to a live game played under the same regulations. As such, basic strategy tables will apply to video blackjack as well.

[Bluejay adds: In all the video blackjack games I've encountered, natural wins only pay even money, which significantly raises the house edge.]

I was at a Louisiana casino last night, and as I played, I noticed that the Big 6/8 bet had been replaced with an Over/Under 7 single-roll wager. A staff member mentioned that this was a new option that pays even money. He seemed to believe that the field bet was superior. Was he correct?

No! The odds of winning stand at 15/36, which translates to 41.67% probability, resulting in a house edge of 16.67%. Even with the 2 and 12 giving 2 to 1 payouts on the field, the house edge remains only 5.56%. The over/under 7 wager ties with any 7 bet being among the least favorable options on the table.

What are the chances of landing the 'dead man’s hand,' which consists of two pairs made up of aces and eights?

There are six combinations for arranging two suits out of four for each pair. Additionally, there are 44 possible cards for the singleton. This leads to a total of 6*6*44 = 1584 successful combinations. Given that there are 2,598,960 total combinations, the probability comes out at 0.0609%.

anonymous

If I place the maximum bet, am I still allowed to make an additional bet for the dealer?

Just out of curiosity, how do the odds shift in video poker if a player always aims for a natural royal flush? This means that the player would consistently hold only the most promising cards to achieve a natural royal flush, disregarding all other potential hands.

anonymous

Here in Vegas, yes you can.

A strategy that prioritizes aiming for a royal flush at any cost—ignoring all other hands winning zero—would provide a return of 47.85% when playing a 9/6 Jacks or Better variant. The expected rate of obtaining a royal flush would increase from once every 40,388 hands to about once every 23,081.

How frequently do casinos alter the payout percentage on a slot machine?

Not very often. Contrary to popular belief, casinos do not tighten payout percentages on weekends or during busy periods. In Las Vegas, any adjustment to the payout percentage for each machine requires filling out an official form. Most slot managers I’ve talked to follow specific policies on how a particular denomination correlates with a set return. The most common reasons for changing a machine's percentage are ownership or management changes, which are relatively infrequent.
